Blackbelt Scholars: STEM Summer Enrichment Camp

Students in Alabama's Blackbelt counties (Hale, Greene, Tuscaloosa, Marengo, and Sumter) have suffered academically during the pandemic and were directly confronted with the digital divide. To close the achievement gap, Woods Promise, Inc. seeks to implement a comprehensive Summer Science Enrichment Program.

The Blackbelt Scholars: STEM Summer Enrichment Camp is the vision of Senator Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, and supported by Woods Promise, Incorporated (Charles C. Woods, Ph.D.) in partnership with Glow Up Leadership Academy (Ms. Marshae Madison). Blackbelt Scholars is designed to promote academic readiness and exploration among middle and high school students to enrich them and their communities. The benefits of a comprehensive summer science program are priceless: teaching children about the how and the "wow!" of science and motivating them to explore the world is one of the best ways to introduce them to STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering/entrepreneurship, art, mathematics).

The inaugural 2021 Blackbelt Scholars program is a truncated pilot curriculum that will last three (3), beginning in mid-July and running through early August. The 2021 program will host 120 middle and high school students in Hale, Greene, Tuscaloosa and Sumter counties. In 2022 and each summer thereafter, it will be a six (6) week structured summer program servicing twice as many students as the pilot initiative in a five county region. Memoranda of understanding (MOU) have been developed between Woods Promise Inc., superintendents, and principals, and students are selected based on a formal application process. The program is designed to further challenge the students' preparation and readiness through an improved academic base in STREAM. It consists of diagnostic testing, skills development in the study, test-taking, communication, inquiry-based course instruction in mathematics/computer technology, biology, chemistry, and physics.

Support the Future of Senator Singleton's Blackbelt Scholars

All contributions to this program are an investment in the sustainability and health of the targeted counties and the state. A knowledgeable, well-trained workforce is the most valuable asset any community can possess. By helping our students engage in this initiative they so desperately desire, our objective is to develop skills and critical competencies by planting seeds for a future workforce in this five-county region.

By contributing to the Blackbelt Scholars program, you will help train 300 developing student minds each summer while closing the learning gaps that many children experienced due to pandemic-related school closures. Any donations made through the link below will be directed to the Blackbelt Scholars program, and donations of all amounts are welcome. Corporate, business and individual contributors that donate at the following levels will also receive free advertising and promotion for your generous contribution to this program, as well as recognition before our student participants and their parents.
